Defence attorneys for dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel will be pushing for him to receive bail in his remaining murder case following today’s not-guilty verdict in the Barrington ‘Bossy’ Burton murder trial.

One of Kartel’s attorneys, Christian Tavares-Finson, says the defence is now awaiting instructions from Kartel regarding the filing of another bail application in relation to the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams matter.

Tavares-Finson says today’s not guilty verdict could impact the Crown’s arguments against bail as the just-ended murder case was part of the Crown’s strategy to oppose bail.

Supreme Court judge Bryan Sykes instructed the 12-member Home Circuit Court jury to return the not-guilty verdicts in the Burton murder case after the prosecution informed the court that it had no further evidence against the men.

The jury has also freed Kartel’s two co-accused, Lenburgh McDonald and Nigel Thompson.

Tavares Finson says today’s not guilty verdict was expected.

The stage for the collapse of the case was set yesterday after Justice Sykes turned down an application by the Crown to admit two witness statements in the trial.

He said he was not convinced that the prosecution took enough steps to locate the witnesses.

However, the lead prosecutor on the Bossy Burton murder case, Maxine Jackson says the Crown did all it could to secure a conviction.

The acting deputy Director of Public Prosecutions says the case was affected by witnesses who refused to be available for the trial despite numerous attempts to have them do so.

Kartel whose real name is Adidja Palmer is to return to the Home Circuit Court in November for trial in relation to the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams murder case.
